Saint Moses the Black lived during the fourth century in Egypt. He was an Ethiopian, and he was black of skin and therefore called “Murin” (meaning “like an Ethiopian”). In his youth he was the slave of an important man, but after he committed a murder, his master banished him, and he joined a band of robbers.

Father Moses Berry, as he was known to most people, was a special priest who in his limited time on this earth has gone full circle and found Christ as the Savior and the Orthodox Church as the true custodian of Christ’s teachings. Following his acceptance into the Orthodox faith and subsequent ordination as a Priest, through his personal experiences and intellectual acumen, Fr. Moses witnessed Christ to everyone who has come across him.
This beautiful lyrical poem will be of interest to all who follow the rise of biblical exegesis in the ancient church, and forms of the great devotion to the Mother of God that is characteristic of the eastern churches.
